There's more to Google than the search engine, actually |
Product
I came across an interesting question last week: What will happen to Facebook after Facebook? This happened during my daily market research (aka the 30-minutes of random surfing I do before starting work) as I read an article that questioned if Facebook, the company, was prepared for business if Facebook, the social networking site, would one day become obsolete. This is important, because a good company shouldn't simply bank on one product as every product has its market shelf life. That's why Google, the company, is more than just Google, the search engine. So what about FingerTec? Do we stop merely at fingerprint technology? Of course not! Read more to see how we've placed our core, actual and augmented products.

Pricing
Upon entering FingerTec HQ last year, I was given a rough picture of FingerTec's marketing strategies including a hand-drawn graph of where the company stood in the market in terms of pricing by my always-on-the-go COO, Ms. Norana Johar. A very high-tech presentation, indeed. Jokes aside, the pricing strategies used revealed a lot about the company just like it would for any other company and I'm not at liberty to discuss them in detail. Therefore, I will instead discuss certain aspects about pricing in general, and try to see if we can relate it back to FingerTec. Wish me luck. Now let's read more!

Sales-related promotions are only part of it |
Any self-respecting Malaysian knows what truly unites the population:
Our three (yes, THREE) major shopping seasons in the country.
The nationwide shopping periods have been an excellent promotional tool as it
helps build Malaysia’s profile as a shopping destination in South East Asia.
While FingerTec can only dream of using the country’s abundance of wealth and
resources to promote the company, it is not impossible for us to achieve the
trifecta of promotional objectives; To present information, increase demand
& create product differentiation. On a surface level, most of FingerTec's promotions are done on the Internet while some actually requires our physical presence overseas. As a whole, these efforts can be categorized into sales-related and non-sales promotions. Read more for juicier details.

FingerTec can go
even further than Sun Wukong's vision
|
Place
When Sun Wukong of the literary masterpiece ‘Journey to the West’ was
challenged by Buddha to leave his gigantic palm, the Monkey King didn’t
hesitate to jump from Buddha’s hand – to get out of that place. Little
did he know that even though he can leap 108,000 miles in a leap, everything in
the world was ‘in Buddha’s hands’. In its own way, this is comparable to
FingerTec’s place in the time attendance and access control industry.
You might travel 108,000 miles away from our humble headquarters in Selangor,
Malaysia, but you’ll still see our name almost anywhere locally,
internationally or on the Web. Place, then, is just a concept. Read more
to understand why.

Follow other's footsteps, or make your own? |
“I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing that brand,” might sound like it comes
from a conceited person but the truth is, most of us apply this rule in our
lives in some way or other. Every decision made on our choices and purchases
defines who we are and our priorities in life. Eva Mendes or Pamela Anderson would
rather go cloth-less than wearing anything made from animal on their bodies, I
reckon. A CEO of a listed company definitely wants to be seen driving the
latest model of a BMW or an Audi and buy a property in a high-profile
neighborhood. An environmentalist would prefer a Prius than a car that boasts
on horsepowers. Whether you agree or not, we are continuously branding ourselves
every step of our way, building an image for the world to see.
In professional and personal lives,
we constantly project perceptions by the brands we choose and, vice versa,
perceive other people by the brands they choose.

Innovators are betting on new interfaces to drive computing power |
Since the foray of personal computers into our life during the last three decades, monitors, keyboards and mouses have remained as the most essential interface devices for human to interact with computers. Even though we observed some minor improvements like monitors from bulky to flat, to higher resolution; keyboards from big to smaller; and mice from cabled to wireless; the nature of the medium stayed put.
It remained that way until computing power were compressed into tablets and smartphones, where the new human interface started to observe a real change, and the change is obviously welcomed and quickly situated the once dominant PC-era to a post-PC era.

Still contemplating on TimeTec Cloud? Fret not. |
Cloud system is the trend these
days. A growing number of companies are deploying cloud-computing systems in
their operations and many more are considering the same move. According to a
recent study of 1,300 U.S and U.K executives, conducted by Rackspace Hosting
with support from Manchester Business School in the UK, 58% of the respondents
agree that cloud system is cost-saving through avoiding IT infrastructure cost,
while 48% of them agreed that cloud systems give them the ability to scale up
cost effectively. That, amongst many other reasons, is one of the important of
why cloud should be implemented.
Believing cloud is the next best
thing, we developed TimeTec Cloud – a cloud-based time attendance management
software suitable for all from SMEs to large corporations. The software offers
a maximum of 14 columns of records for viewing and checking, 26 types of
readily formatted reports, which you can view, save or print in various formats
and the flexibility to export the attendance data into CSV or XLS format as
input to a 3rd party payroll or software. With TimeTec Cloud, all
you need to do is register, set your attendance rules in the application, sync
it with the biometrics hardware and you are ready to roll.

I wish I've done housekeeping before! |
MYTH: So long as the software
works, don’t fix it.
FACT: It’s a disaster
waiting to happen. Imagine not cleaning your house for 6 months. Yes, that’s the reaction I’m looking for. The
same applies to TCMS V2.
SYMPTOMS: You start to
experience snail-speed performance when viewing attendance sheet and downloading
clocking data from USB. If you are lucky, you might even get to experience a ‘hang’
during editing of Attendance Sheet.
REMEDY: I strongly
recommend you to perform housekeeping for your TCMS V2 software once every 3
months to keep it performing at an optimal level. Read more for my 6 Handy
Housekeeping Tips compiled for your easy reference.

People
When
Mark Zuckerberg wants to work with you, he’ll walk with you through the woods
behind the Facebook headquarters. At the end of the hike, Mark will
simultaneously ‘unveil’ a breathtaking view of Silicon Valley along with an
offer you can’t refuse – a job position or business offer from Facebook. Well, since Puchong is no Palo Alto, I
did not expect a walk through the woods with FingerTec CEO, Mr Teh Hon Seng. I
did, however, hope for other seemly practices that would make me go, “wow, FingerTec
people are different” while working here. I wasn’t disappointed there. Read
more to see what I saw while people-watching, not unlike Woody Allen.

Let's shed some light on Cloud Computing |
Cloud Computing (or for those uninitiated, putting your information or database in a
remote server location) has become a buzzword in the IT industry these few
years. For avid Internet users, it’s pretty hard to escape from consuming and
utilizing Cloud applications or Cloud Solutions. If you have a Gmail account,
you are a cloud user; if you have a Facebook account, which I strongly think
you do, you are a cloud user. You have a Dropbox? You are also using cloud. You
see, cloud is everywhere around you. In fact, apart from our personal usage of
cloud systems available in the Internet, on a company level FingerTec has
started using Cloud services and writing customized programming code since five
years back when we first deployed Customer Relationship Management using
Salesforce.com.

Looking at a glass cup you just had in your hands you notice you left a number of fingerprints on it. You examine each closely and you find yourself fascinated by what you see. But what are fingerprints exactly? Let us talk about that.
A fingerprint is an impression on a surface left behind by friction ridges on the surface of a finger. A friction ridge is a raised portion of the skin that is made out of a series of connected ridges. Prints are left behind due to the natural sweat from the eccrine glands of the finger. If you have ever been fingerprinted for government or work-related purposes, ink can also be used to create a fingerprint.

Nowadays, fingerprints and fingerprinting is a common form of identification; we have to be fingerprinted for various official purposes and many companies use fingerprint scanners to identify, verify, and authorize personnel access. But how was fingerprinting used in the distant past? Let us find out.
Pottery found in the ancient civilizations of Babylon, China, Egypt, Greece, Minoa, and Rome have had fingerprints found on them. Fingerprints have also been found on bricks and tiles. In certain cases, prints were deeply embedded into the clay as a sort of maker's mark. Ancient Babylon used fingerprints in conjunction with written signatures on contracts. Around 246 BCE, Chinese officials would impress their fingerprints onto seals for official documents, much like signet rings were used to seal wax-sealed letters. When paper became prevalent in China, they would impress their hand print onto documents alongside their signatures.
In law enforcement, the first time fingerprints were used as evidence was as in China around 300 CE; it was used to identify a thief. Over 300 years later in 650, Chinese historian Kia Kung-Yen would proclaim the usefulness of fingerprints as a means of identifying individuals. Persian physician Rashid-al-Din Hamadani would reiterate this point when he said "Experience shows that no two individuals have fingers exactly alike."
