Fingerprint Security Banks In On Biometric Uniqueness
Robberies, break-ins and burglaries are more common than you think in business premises. It could be an insider job, in some cases it is carefully planned attempts or simply someone who sees the opportunity of relaxed security in a premise and takes advantage of the situation. Biometrics
has become a trend in the last 10 years because
it banks in on the uniqueness of one’s identity
for verification. No one has the same fingerprint; even twin studies suggest
that while the each twin has the same DNA carbon copy, the ridges and valleys
of their fingerprints are determined by the stress received in the womb. No
twin has the same exact fingerprints. Hence, biometric technique such as
fingerprint, iris, facial recognition, voice and etc have
been well accepted for security products.
For
a fingerprint to work as a security solution, the image of a fingerprint is
transformed using an algorithm to be stored as a
string of numbers as identification. Matching live fingerprint needs to be
produced for identity verification before the system could proceed to other instructions
such as opening doors and all activities are recorded for audit trails. The
advancement of fingerprint technology makes it difficult for any culprit to
steal an identity to access a certain premise unnoticed.

I wrote about Microsoft’s transformation last month after Satya Nadella was named the new CEO of Microsoft, but talked scantily about our own transformation even though we’re very much at the crossroad of our self-stirred transformation. Right. Why should I bother about transformation, even if Microsoft failed to transform? I should have minded my own business.
Some of my staff commented that our glory is still in progressive manner, and we don’t have external forces like Microsoft to push us; do we really need this transformation?
A Biometric Database?
Concerns about privacy and security have keep biometric systems from being used more widely by government agencies and local municipalities. As people become more comfortable with biometric security, however, that may change.
Israel is already beginning to implement a biometric system by which citizens can opt to give two finger prints and a facial scan. The government hopes to use this biometric information database to make it easier and cost effective to identify citizens for the purposes of voting, taxation and other government functions. The program is slated to last for two years, after which its effectiveness will be rated. Some people wonder how effective such a system will be considering it is opt-in, but thousands have already enrolled.
Although there is more of a culture of personal privacy in America, biometrics is entering the national debate, first through the Supreme Court and now through the immigration debate. Biometrics may play a part in the path to citizenship, even if that part is as simple as providing an easy way to identify and organize the millions of people making their way down the path to citizenship. Some people see biometrics as the best and least fraud-prone way to identify people. Others, however, dismiss the idea as costly and intrusive.
